Welcome to Refúgio Zé Espanhol, a place where mountains, tradition and nature come together to offer an authentic experience in the heart of Peneda-Gerês National Park!
Located in Branda da Bouça dos Homens, at over 1,070 metres above sea level, this cosy mountain retreat is named after the owner’s grandfather, affectionately known as “Zé Espanhol”. A true mountain man, shepherd and guardian of ancestral traditions, he devoted much of his life to caring for animals, the land and the customs of the highlands. This accommodation was created as a tribute to his memory, preserving the identity and spirit of someone who lived in perfect harmony with the mountains.
Spread across two floors, the retreat combines comfort, authenticity and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. On the lower floor, guests will find a bedroom with a double bed that opens onto a small private balcony, the perfect place to read a book, enjoy the silence of the mountains or savour a glass of wine at sunset.
Upstairs, there is a fully equipped kitchen with direct access to the outdoor terrace. Here, you can choose to enjoy your meals indoors or outside while admiring the magnificent Serra da Peneda and its highest peak, Outeiro Alvo, rising to approximately 1,340 metres above sea level. This floor also includes a full bathroom with a shower and a comfortable living room, located two steps above the kitchen, featuring two sofas, one of which converts into a sofa bed, a TV area and a games corner.
Outside, nature takes centre stage. Relax on the sun loungers, enjoy meals cooked on the barbecue or simply take in the panoramic mountain views stretching as far as the eye can see.
The location of Refúgio Zé Espanhol is truly exceptional. Set within one of the most authentic and well-preserved areas of Peneda-Gerês National Park, it offers access to extraordinary natural beauty. Ancient trails, hidden waterfalls, crystal-clear streams and stunning mountain landscapes invite exploration throughout the year. The local wildlife and flora are remarkably diverse, and it is common to spot wild Garrano horses, native Cachena cattle, birds of prey, deer, foxes and, with a little luck, the Iberian wolf, the iconic king of this protected ecosystem.
Just a few kilometres away stands one of the region’s most remarkable landmarks: the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Peneda, beautifully integrated into the dramatic mountain scenery and considered one of the most impressive sites in northern Portugal.
Traditional mountain cuisine is another highlight of the region. Authentic flavours of goat, lamb, traditional smoked sausages, mountain honey and locally produced delicacies reflect centuries of heritage and craftsmanship.
When winter arrives, the Branda is transformed into a magical landscape. Snow blankets the rooftops, trails and fields, creating a rare and enchanting setting that invites rest, reflection and a return to the simple pleasures of mountain life. Light the fireplace, wrap yourself in a warm blanket and listen to the soothing crackle of burning wood.
